The 12 color analysis palettes

Each of the color analysis palettes links to its season's full guide, with neutrals, accents, makeup and the shades to skip. Under each name: the trait that leads the season, then its undertone.

How the 12 color analysis palettes are built

Every seasonal color palette starts from a family: warm Spring and Autumn, cool Summer and Winter. The 12-season system then asks which trait leads. Light and Dark seasons are led by depth, Bright and Soft seasons by clarity, and the True seasons by undertone alone. So a color palette analysis is really three questions, and the 12 color analysis palettes are their twelve answers.

Look-alike color analysis palettes, side by side

Most people narrow it down to two neighbouring color analysis palettes and get stuck. Neighbours share most of what they wear, so a single trait separates them. These four pairs cause the most doubt.

Soft Summer
Soft Autumn

UndertoneThe same hazy softness. Summer leans dusty mauve and dusty blue; Autumn leans camel, olive and terracotta.

Light Summer
Light Spring

UndertoneBoth pale and gentle. Summer is powder blue, lavender and rose; Spring is peach, butter yellow and warm ivory.

True Winter
Bright Winter

ClarityBoth cool with strong contrast. Bright Winter turns the saturation up: electric blue, vivid pink, emerald.

Dark Winter
Dark Autumn

UndertoneBoth deep, and both wear burgundy. Winter adds black, navy and cool plum; Autumn adds chocolate, mahogany and gold.

Neighbouring color analysis palettes on one woman: a muted dusty rose sweater vs a bright magenta one

One trait, a visible difference

Same woman, same sweater, same light. In dusty rose her face stays the focus; in electric magenta the sweater takes over and her skin looks washed out. That is a soft season wearing a bright season's color, and it is the gap between two color analysis palettes that look close on screen.

Which of the color analysis palettes is yours?

Looking at color analysis palettes tells you what each season wears, not which season you are. Three quick checks get you close:

  • Undertone. Gold jewelry looks better on you than silver? Lean warm (Spring, Autumn). Silver wins? Lean cool (Summer, Winter).
  • Depth. Squint at a selfie in black and white. Mostly pale greys point light; strong darks point deep.
  • Clarity. If black and bright white look sharp on you, you are clear. If they look harsh, you are soft.

Self-checks get you to a family. To land on one of the 12 color analysis palettes, let the AI read your undertone, depth and clarity from one daylight selfie. It takes about a minute and the first read is free.

Putting color analysis palettes to work

  1. Sort the closet once

Hang everything that matches your palette on one side. What is left is not wrong, it just belongs below the waist or with a palette-colored scarf.
  2. Buy near-face pieces from it

Tops, knitwear and lipstick come from the palette. Jeans, shoes and bags can come from anywhere.
  3. Take it to the salon

Color analysis palettes work for hair too. A warm palette asks for copper, gold and caramel tones; a cool one asks for ash, beige and cool brown.

Color analysis palettes FAQ

How many colors are in each of the color analysis palettes?

The color analysis palettes here show eight core colors each, the ones that work for the most pieces. The full season guides add accents, neutrals and the shades to skip, so a complete palette usually runs to 30 or more.

Can I wear colors outside my palette?

Yes. Color analysis palettes matter most right next to your face: tops, scarves, collars, lipstick and hair. Away from the face, in trousers, shoes or bags, any color you like works.

Why do color analysis palettes differ between sites?

Each analyst or brand picks its own swatches for a season, and screens shift color. Read color analysis palettes by their traits (warm or cool, light or deep, bright or soft) rather than by one exact shade.

Are 4-season and 12-season palettes the same?

The 12 color analysis palettes split each of the four families into three. Four seasons only ask warm or cool; twelve also ask how light or deep and how bright or soft you are, which is where most people actually differ.
